This is just a place for me to spam movie stills without clogging up my main account, I’ll also share things that interest me about the movie and re-hashed trivia. It mainly follows Orozco, a very cynical Columbian embalmer with a harsh and blunt way of speaking. I found it interesting that he seems to use whatever tools work best despite whether or not it is “professional.” In between Orozco’s work we get shots of dead bodies on the street being handled by the authorities as crowds of people look on, and interviews with a few other embalmers as well. The backdrop of Columbia is an added layer of morbidity. It’s very gruesome, obviously, but very awesome and interesting. It’s a Swedish film involving, what I can best describe as musical terrorists, and a tone-deaf detective (who hates music) trying to find the “criminals.” Ironically the detective comes from a family filled with prominent musicians.</p> <p>These anarchist musicians themselves are mostly composed of experimental drummers. They decide to do a concert which will take place in various spots in the city done illegally due to their methods. <a href="http://youtu.be/LTebtHsTy7A">Their first target is a hospital patient being used as a component to their overall sound</a>. (The link goes to a video that shows it, the song is titled “Doctor Doctor.”) I highly recommend watching it (it’s for instant on Netflix), describing it doesn’t do it justice. I found it to be a pretty unique premise. The first time I viewed this movie I wasn’t too crazy about it. I remember being somewhat disappointed, but after it was over, and I thought back on it, I slowly liked it more as an afterthought rather than when viewing it. I didn’t bother to watch it again until now, and it holds up better. I don’t know if my taste in movies has expanded, therefore lending me the patience to enjoy it more, or if I simply just liked it better on my second viewing.</p> <p>Ezra Miller plays a detached character by the name of Rob that is in a prep-school. He’s obsessed with little clips on the internet, and somewhat violent porn. He seems a bit depressed with the lack of connection he makes with his peers, at one point stating to his mom on the phone that “no on here likes me.” When it is told to the students that they have to join an extracurricular activity, or else face their grades being lowered, Rob decides to join the audio and video club. It mainly focuses on the aftermath of two popular twins death due to cocaine with lethal combinations in them. Rob is approached with making a memorial video for them, as Rob observes the effect their deaths have on the school he seems unaffected by it to a disturbing degree. I could never tell if he was holding back, or if he was just desensitized. He was easy for me to relate to (not that being able to relate to a character is always important to me), being this person who’s obsessed with the internet, and the displaced feeling you get when he’s among his classmates.</p> <p>There are a lot of interesting parts in this film, and although the pace may seem extremely slow, I say give it a chance. There was a moment when he places his neck around a female friend/love interest of his, starting to choke her, while the camera they are using is just showing her expression and his hand. He was obviously mimicking the porn you see him watching in the beginning. There’s also another scene where he starts hitting and punching his face with this coldly calm expression, then it cuts away to show him making grotesque, aggressive expressions with no sound. I don’t know if it was trying to show that his character is desensitized, or if he feels numb and wants to feel something. It’s reminiscent of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103793/"><em>Benny’s Video</em></a> in some respects, and I recommend that movie as well. The mood of this movie is somber and quiet, the cinematography is pretty in a sterile way.
