No Country for Old Men
Seeing Anton smile is both creepy and strangely attractive. I gave it a nice good pause at the end; just so everyone could properly picture seeing that face before they died.
Box, A small review on this.
Oh hey, look, I made one of those gifs that looks like the person doesn’t know how to make a gif so they just take two frames, and end up making a stupid faux-stereoscopic image. (I do know that sometimes there’s no way of not doing it frame by frame in order to do something.) Anyhow, I was taking screenshots with VLC media player, so that I could draw her, and I got two shots that were very similar. I decided to make a gif, and now it will give me the ample opportunity to talk about the short film “Box” by Takashi Miike. It’s in an anthology horror movie of three short stories called Three… Extremes, which I highly enjoyed and highly recommend. (The other two directors who are in it are Fruit Chan and Park Chan-Wook [whom I love from what I’ve seen].)
The visuals of “Box” are absolutely beautiful and visually arresting. The opening scene is atmospheric and sets the melancholy tone for the rest of the short. Some of the scenes are reminiscent of Takashi Miike’s earlier film, Audition. The synopsis of the story goes as follows: A woman is haunted by memories and images of her past as a circus attraction. The rivalry between her and her twin sister for the affections of the older, male host spirals into a tragedy that I will not reveal here. It’s a very moving piece, and I wouldn’t mind uploading it somewhere so that those who are curious about just this short can download it from me. If anyone is interested in that happening, let me know. Also, for some reason in reviews everyone assumes that the man who looked after them was their father, and I didn’t see it that way at all for some reason. Maybe because I’m used to the ring leader being a person who scouts out talent and adds them into the show. Anyhow if you like subtly disturbing (or maybe some would see it as outright disturbing) stories and surrealism then you’d enjoy this.
